Lionel Messi and Barcelona being investigated amid rumors of breaching Covid protocols: Reports

Barcelona and Lionel Messi could be in trouble for breaking Covid norms ahead of their crucial game against Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

According to the Daily Mail via ABC, the Catalans and their skipper will undergo an investigation from La Liga amid rumors of a breach of Covid protocols. Lionel Messi reportedly hosted his Barcelona teammates at a barbecue at home on Monday night.

The Argentinean hosted the party in an attempt to build a team bond ahead of their title decider against Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s team are currently two points ahead of Barcelona and a win for the Catalans could help them edge closer to a league triumph.

However, it appears that Lionel Messi’s plan for boosting team morale has landed him in trouble with the authorities. That is because La Liga rules prevent a gathering of more than six people and the get-together at the Argentinean’s place reportedly broke that norm.

It was reported that social distancing norms were maintained at the party, as tables were placed at a distance from each other and people were seated outside.

However, the La Liga authorities were unimpressed when reading about Lionel Messi hosting the get-together with Barcelona players.

Interestingly, the Atletico Madrid squad arranged a similar gathering recently, but they had taken permission from the authorities ahead of the party and also ensured that all Covid protocols were followed.

However, La Liga officials learned of the barbecue hosted by Lionel Messi through the media and have initiated an investigation about the matter. Interestingly, the wives and girlfriends of the Barcelona players were also invited to the gathering.

On Monday night, Lionel Messi scored a second-half brace to ensure Barcelona secured a 3-2 comeback win over Valencia.

That victory kept their title chances alive, and with Real Madrid also in the mix, the La Liga title race could go down to the wire. However, the Catalans will be hopeful of their chances, thanks to the outstanding form of their talisman.

Lionel Messi has already scored 36 times this season from 44 appearances and is leading the La Liga Golden Boot race with 28 goals so far.

If Barcelona desire to get their hands on the La Liga trophy, they will need their skipper to fire on all cylinders in the remaining games.

The club, however, will also need the authorities to be lenient about the get-together at the 33-year-old’s house.

Leicester players Hamza Choudhury and Wesley Fofana showed support for the Palestinians after winning the FA Cup final on Saturday. English midfielder Choudhury and French defender Fofana were seen holding a Palestinian flag. Choudhury had the flagged draped over his shoulders as he collected his winner’s medal after beating Chelsea 1-0. Tens of thousands of protesters marched in support of Palestinians on Saturday in major European cities including London, Berlin, Madrid and Paris, as the worst violence in years raged between Israel and militants in Gaza.

A social media post from Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny also showing his support for the Palestinian people has been hit by a backlash from Jewish fans.

The Egyptian posted on his Twitter account: “My heart and my soul and my support for you Palestine.”

Arsenal confirmed to Sky Sports that they have spoken with Elneny after concerns about the post were raised from one of the club’s sponsors, coffee maker Lavazza.

“As with any employees of Arsenal, our players are entitled to express their views on their own platforms,” the club told Sky Sports News.

“That said we have spoken to Mo about this so he understands the wider implications of his post.

“As a club we are committed to confronting and eliminating all forms of discrimination and continue to champion the need for equality and diversity across all areas of life.”

Sandpaper-Gate scandal: Australian cricketer makes SHOCKING revelations

It was in 2018, in Cape Town when the ‘gentleman’s game’ was breached by some players of the Australian side. In the Test game against South Africa, three players – Steve Smith, David Warner, and Cameron Bancroft – had tried to tamper with the ball using sandpaper.

The trio surely faced consequences as both Smith and Warner were being suspended for a year. Smith also lost his captaincy to Tim Paine. As for Bancroft, who was spotted using the sandpaper hidden in his trousers, served a nine-month ban. However, this move just derailed his international career up to a certain extent.

However, now three years later, Bancroft in an interview to The Guardian hinted that the Australian bowlers were aware of the plot.

“I think, yeah, I think it’s pretty probably self-explanatory,” a hesitant Bancroft answered after being asked if the bowlers were aware of it.

“Yeah, look, all I wanted to do was to be responsible and accountable for my own actions and part. Yeah, obviously what I did benefits bowlers, and the awareness around that, probably, is self-explanatory,” he added.

However, Bancroft also admitted that he had been even a little aware of the consequences, he would have made better decisions.
