What if UFC fighters were ‘Star Wars’ characters?

A long time ago in a UFC galaxy far, far away….

Originally used as an advertisement in The London Evening News to congratulate Margaret Thatcher on her appointment as Prime Minister of the UK in 1979, May 4th has been known as “Star Wars Day” for many years now.

May the fourth be with you (and also with you). The date is now a pun based on the popular Star Wars catchphrase “May the force be with you.”

Like Star Wars, the UFC is its own epic franchise full of heroes, villains and fanboys alike. Let’s imagine if UFC fighters were Star Wars characters.

Israel Adesanya – Obi-Wan Kenobi

Your eyes can deceive you, do not trust them [Obi-Wan Kenobi]

Few UFC fighters have what it takes to be a true jedi master, but you could certainly make a strong case for Israel Adesanya. Considered by many as the best striker in MMA, Adesanya has won all nine of his UFC middleweight fights since he signed in 2018.

No stranger to a fictional universe, the Nigerian-born fighter is a huge fan of anime cartoons. His nickname, “The Last Stylebender,” is inspired by his favorite animated TV series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”

Unsuccessful in his ambitious move up to light heavyweight earlier this year, he will need to use the force in his rematch with Marvin Vettori at UFC 263 this June – only then will we see the return of the Jedi.

Tony Ferguson – Yoda

Great warrior, wars not make one great. [Yoda]

Having lost two UFC wars in the octagon last year, Tony Ferguson truly knows the meaning of Yoda’s cryptic advice. ‘El Cucuy’ is now on a two-fight losing streak as he prepares to fight Beneil Dariush at UFC 262 in under two weeks.

Unorthodox in style and choice of words, Ferguson has a lot in common with humanoid alien Yoda. The little green grandmaster of the Jedi order likes to jumble sentences into often confusing motivational questions – which wouldn’t look out of place as an ‘El Cucuy’ Instagram post.

If Dariush proves victorious at UFC 262 just remember: Happens to every guy sometimes this does.

Conor McGregor – Jar Jar Binks

Yousa should follow me now, okeeday? [Jar Jar Binks]

Initially introduced in The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar Binks was intended to provide some much-needed comic relief. You could argue that Conor McGregor has made a name for himself on pure comedy alone, and his early UFC career contained some hilarious moments.

Unfortunately good intentions are often not enough. Now universally hated by Star Wars fans, Binks is the biggest flaw in the epic franchise. This is perhaps comparable with ‘The Notorious’s’ credibility in the eyes of some UFC fans. While McGregor was charming in his own way, that charm seems to have worn off. Of course the Irishman is a world-famous superstar, but his recent UFC performances look a bit like Jar Jar Binks’ diction – all over the place.

At least Binks doesn’t have his own whiskey – although who wouldn’t want a Proper Jar?

French champion jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot was charged Wednesday with the rape of a female rider at Cagnes-sur-Mer, prosecutors in Senlis announced. Boudot, who won the 2019 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, is accused of raping the plaintiff on the night of February 17 at Cagnes-sur-Mer on France’s Cote d’Azur. “My client, a 25-year-old woman from Chantilly’s racing community, was at a party,” lawyer Justine Devred told AFP. “It’s highly likely she was made to drink or administered substances to make her incapable of consent.”

“She has flashes, long periods, moments when her body was no longer responding,” Devred added.

A second jockey has been charged with failure to report a crime in connection with the case.

Although the alleged rape took place at the racing centre of Cagnes-sur-Mer near Nice the case was moved to Senlis near France’s flat racing headquarters Chantilly where Boudot lives.

Under the terms of his 50,000 euro bail Boudot is banned from entering Chantilly’s Oise region.

The 28-year-old, French champion in 2015, 2016 and 2020, is also being investigated for a second charge of rape, which he denies, dating back to 2015.

In this case he has been named as an assisted-witness, Jean-Baptiste Bladier, the prosecutor at Senlis north of Paris announced.

As in the February case the plaintiff says she too was drugged before being raped.

Current women‘s head coach WV Raman, former coach Ramesh Powar, ex-India players Ajay Ratra and Hrishikesh Kanitkar appeared for virtual interviews conducted by Madan Lal-led Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) on Wednesday. Out of 35 applications, eight India internationals were shortlisted for interviews, which included four men and four women. While the four male candidates were interviewed on the day, the four female candidates Mamtha Maben, Devika Vaidya, former chairman of selectors Hemlatha Kala and Suman Sharma will be interviewed on Thursday.

“Four interviews were conducted today. All the four candidates came well prepared. The remaining four interviews will be conducted tomorrow,” CAC head Madan Lal told PTI on Wednesday.

Two CAC members — Lal and Sulakshana Naik — were present as RP Singh couldn’t join as his father died on Wednesday.

It is learnt that all the four candidates gave good presentations and their interviews ran between 35 to 45 minutes with extensive discussion on the roadmap going into next year’s ODI World Cup.

One of the candidates was apparently asked about his idea of creating bench-strength once some of the legends call time after the completion of next year’s marquee event.

Avesh Khan, on top of his game after IPL 2021

Before every IPL, Avesh Khan pays a visit to the MRF Pace Foundation. Here, he hones his skill, trains hard and settles into a good bowling groove.

This year was a breakout season for the 24-year-old Avesh in the Indian Premier League. Before the first game he remembers Delhi Capitals coach, the legendary Ricky Ponting, telling him, “This is your moment seize it.”

And after he produced a stellar performance, Ponting said, “Now that you have got off to a good start, continue in the same rhythm. We will back you fully.”

Bowling with fire and hostility with the new ball and at the death, he finished with 14 wickets in eight matches at 7.70 (economy rate). Only Harshal Patel, with 17, grabbed more wickets. “When the shine was there, I was able to move the ball. Then I was able to send down yorkers.”

There is a strong Australian connection to Avesh’s success. Ponting, impressed with Avesh’s potential, spoke to him regularly about the day’s play and the game-plan for the next encounter.

“Ponting is a very good motivator,” said Avesh.

And Aussie pace bowling legend, Glenn McGrath, fine-tuned Avesh’s technique for longer duration matches, taught him the virtues of patience and made him bowl on the fourth stump at the MRF Pace Foundation.

Head coach M. Senthilnathan constantly interacted with Avesh.

One of the four ‘travelling’ standbyes for the tour of England, Avesh is looking at the future with optimism.  Someone with a semi side-on release and a high-arm action, Avesh has strong shoulders and a good seam position.

He said, “I can consistently bowl at over 140 kmph. And my slower delivery is around 120.”

His most memorable wickets in this year’s IPL? “Bowling both Virat Kohli and M.S. Dhoni. Kohli was beaten by movement. And Dhoni attempted a pull.”

Talking about his rapport with Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant, Avesh said, “We go back to our India under-19 days. He gave me complete freedom with my field placements. And we would discuss the day’s play.”

Avesh is on top of his game now.
