World Telecommunication Day 2021: Theme And All You Need To Know

World Telecommunication Day 2021: Read all about the day and its importance amid COVID-19

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is being observed today. The coronavirus pandemic has indeed highlighted the critical role of information and communication technologies more than ever. As the daily normal lives of people are hit by lockdowns and families are forced to stay at home, digital technology has become the only way to stay in touch with friends and family. World Telecommunication Day is celebrated annually on 17th May since 1969. On this day the International Telecommunication Union or ITU was founded and the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865, was signed.

The theme of World Temecommunication Day 2021 is: Accelerating digital transformation in challenging times​​. From children’s school education to adults’ working from home and important activities like banking and even just staying in touch with family, the role played by telecommunication has become crucial. ”The COVID-19 has also brought to the fore the startling digital inequalities between and within countries,” according to the International Telecommunication Union.

On World Telecommunication Day let’s take a look at the ITU’s call to action so that the digital divide can be bidged. The ITU, calls on ”to accelerate the digital transformation in challenging times. Here are the areas of focus: ”Continue leveraging telecommunications/ICTs by developing digital policies and strategies to adapt and respond timely and effectively to different challenges that may occur” and ”report national progress with special focus on the targets that particularly contribute to digital transformation in the framework of the Connect 2030 Agenda, by providing data and statistics, as appropriate…”.

  • India on Sunday registered 3,11,170 new coronavirus cases, pushing the country’s tally of infections since the pandemic began in January 2020 to 2,46,84,077. The toll rose by 4,077 to 2,70,284. 
  • Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that coronavirus vaccination is likely to be suspended in the city on Monday due to Cyclone Tauktae. It will resume from Tuesday. In Gujarat, vaccinations will be on hold till Tuesday.
  • The Centre issued new coronavirus-related guidelines for peri-urban, rural and tribal areas, taking note of the “gradual ingress” of the infection in these regions.
  • The Centre said that more than 1.84 crore doses of coronavirus vaccines were available with states and they will receive nearly 51 lakh more over the next three days. Meanwhile, the CoWIN portal used for online registration of coronavirus vaccines has been reconfigured to reflect the extension of interval for two doses of Covishield to 12-16 weeks, the Centre said on Sunday. It, however, added that the online appointments already booked for the second dose of Covishield will remain valid.
  • Bharat Biotech announced that its coronavirus vaccine Covaxin is effective against the mutant strains of the virus, including the ones first detected in the United Kingdom and India.

MES Recruitment 2021: Last day to apply for 502 posts of Supervisor, Draughtsman at mes.gov.in



The Military Engineer Services (MES) will today conclude the online applications for the recruitment of Supervisor and Draughtsman on its official website. Eligible candidates can apply for the positions on the official website mes.gov.in till 11.59 PM.

The recruitment drive is being conducted to fill 502 vacancies, out of which, 450 vacancies are for Supervisor Barracks and Stores and 52 are for Draughtsman. The recruitment examination is scheduled to be conducted on June 20 tentatively and the admit card will be released two weeks prior to the exam.

Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit: The lower and upper age limit for both posts is 18 and 30 respectively.

Educational Qualifications

Draughtsman: A Diploma in Architectural Assistantship from a recognized university.

Supervisor: A Master with economics or commerce or statistics/business studies or public administration and one year experience OR Graduation in economics or commerce or statistics/business studies or public administration and Diploma in Material Management/ Warehousing Management/ Purchasing/ Logistics/ Public Procurement) and 2 years of experience.

Application Fee

Candidates will have to pay the registration fee of Rs 100. However, the Women/ SC/ ST/ PWD/ ESM candidates are exempted from the payment of any registration fee.
